Looking at just two of the most common primary care diseases, the numbers are alarming.
Diabetes: According to the CDC, in the last 20 years, the number of American adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled as our population has grown older and become more overweight or obese. According to the 2020 National Diabetes Statistics Report, over 34 million people in the United States have diabetes, with 1 in 5 unaware they have it; and over 1 in 3 Americans, approximately 88 million adults, have prediabetes – of which 84% are unaware they have it. Medical costs for people with diabetes are twice as high as for people who don’t have diabetes.1
Heart Disease: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, causing about 1 in 4 deaths.2 Approximately 1 in 2 Americans have at least one of the three key risk factors of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking.3 In some cases, heart disease may be undiagnosed until a person experiences signs or symptoms of a heart attack, heart failure, or an arrhythmia.4
